MANUFACTURING PROCESS
Every year, especially in August, Georgia Charndelina-Argyriou travels for about a month to the countries that have long been the largest markets for handmade rugs, such as Iran, Nepal and India. When she returns back to Greece, she returns having chosen, one by one, the carpets that will be the best fit for her clients’ homes.
As she explains, this process is anything but formal. Instead, it is a two-way communication, a completely lively and creative interaction.
“We do not take the carpets completely. We will go to the places where the looms are located, we will see the carpets that they have prepared for us and we will give the instructions on how to wash them, how to cut them, how to finish them. We have looms with carpets in weaving condition, we have other pieces that have already been woven and we have to choose how the finishings will be done, to see the last touch, to choose how the final wash will be done, whether it will be warmer or hotter cold tones “.
The purpose of these trips is not only their selection but also their elaboration. We do not buy the carpets finished, like most traders, but when they come down from the loom, they are unshaven, unkempt and without the final wash. So, there we decide how the finishing and washing of the carpet will be done so that we have the result we want, more antique or more whitish. The decision on the final image of the carpet will be made at that time. Therefore, our presence there is important because the refinement of each carpet is done only in the country of production.
